The TACS symposium is the International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Software. TACS'97 is the third one, following TACS'91 and TACS'94, both of which were held at Aoba Memorial Building, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan.
Sendai is the largest city in the northern part of the Honshu Island of Japan, with a population of about 900,000. The city is known in Japan as the "City of Trees". It is 350 km north from Tokyo and about 2 hours away by the Tohoku Bullet Train (Tohoku Shinkansen). Sendai is a modern, safe city with a temperate climate blessed by four distinct, beautiful seasons. Tohoku University started in 1907 as the third national university, following University of Tokyo and Kyoto University. Tohoku University is well-known to be the birthplace of electrical communication technology in Japan by Yagi's invention of antenna and Nishizawa's inventions of optical communication and related semicondutors among various contributions in science and technology.
